News about the dam.
Drills and grouting equipment have been replaced by cranes tall enough to lower things way, way down in the Clearwater Dam.
What the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is doing is constructing a concrete wall within the dam. . . starting about 40 feet below the dam, bottom.
Borings found numerous voids in and below the dam, some from settling over the decades, some not found or considered important when the dam was constructed.
For the past several years, construction crews have drilled into the voids, then pumped them full of a grout similar to concrete.
As a result, the concrete wall will extend about 40 feet below the base of the dam. The grouting has sealed things to a depth of about 110 feet below the base of the dam.
The job is expected to take about four more years. A stronger dam may offer more flexiblity in its operation.
